Bumblebees can fly very quickly. They can reach ground speeds of 54 kilometres per hour (km/h).
Bumblebees are very strong! They carry up to 90 percent of their body weight in food with them to avoid starvation.
Bumblebees can do more work and carry more pollen than other bees, including honeybees. In fact, they can do up to 50 times as much work as a normal honeybee.
The number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including the removal of wild flowers and flowering tree from the landscape, habitat loss and extensive use of pesticides.
Kia Ora Ariana,
ReplyDeleteYou are buzzing quickly through these activities, ka pai! Did you learn anything from the NZ Bumblebee Conservation Trust website? I had no idea how much work bumble bees do, did you? I thought it was the honey bees that did all of the work but oh boy I was wrong. I am glad that we have the bumble bees working hard to pollinate a wide range of plants throughout New Zealand. Did you know bumble bees run around excitedly like a happy dance after they have come back to their hive from a successful trip? I think this fact is awesome!
Keep up the awesome work!
Blog ya later,
Dani
Hello Ariana,
ReplyDeleteWell done and pat on the back for completing this activity about bumble bees. It was very interesting reading your post because it surprised me that they could carry 90% of their body weight. I am scared of bumble bees because I dislike insects, but I would absolutely want to learn more about them! I personally don't know what pesticides are, so they are quite interesting to find out about. Maybe next time you can separate your work to make sure people can tell the difference between 2 facts.
Happy Blogging

Good morning Ariana,
ReplyDeleteWell done on completing another SLJ activity, the Kaikohekohe commenting team are all so proud of your hard work so far. Remember, you still have 10 days to complete as many activities as you can before the programme ends (25th Jan) and school starts up.
What was your favourite fact about Bumblebees? Or the fact that surprised you the most? I was very shocked to hear they can reach the speed of 54kms/h. I imagine how fast a car feels when going 50kms and can't imagine how Bumblebees would feel going that fast, being so small! They are speedy little things.
Do you ever see Bumblebees around your home? I am quite scared of bees as I accidentally sat on one when I was younger and it stung me. I don't blame it for stinging me, however, it did really hurt!
Looking forward to reading more of your blog posts soon Ariana :-) keep up the fabulous work!
Nga mihi, Georgia.
Hi Ariana,
ReplyDeleteWell done on finishing this activity. You did a great job filling in the blanks on the information about bumblebees. What was your favorite fact about them? I like how they are very hard working and do 50 times more work than a normal bee. Keep up the good work.
